Ubyssey Photographers Unite!: First Summer Pitches

First Summer Pitches

It's the start of summer, and we're back in the swing of things here at the Ubyssey, pick up a pitch or two.

Farm Girl
Photographer: Open

Deadline: Ongoing project
Kathy (one of last year's culture editors) is going to be working at the UBC farm (you know, the one we all put up such a fuss about). She will be planting, tending and eventually selling the produce she cultivates, and then writing about it. Think about it as a "City girl meets rural world" type of adventure. We are going to be doing a bunch of media projects, and what I'm hoping someone is interested in doing is documenting Kathy's adventures in the field. This would involve periodically coming out to the farm - and hopefully eventually a trip to the market - to take pictures of the farm, the plants, the fields, Kathy, etc. This is your chance to tell a story. Often we photographers are only the supplemental story, here you will have the opportunity to tell the story with your lens. We'll put the whole thing together and it should be a great portfolio builder, possibly even a gallery piece. So here's the deal: send me a message and pitch yourself to this story. This isn't your average bear, and so I'd like to make sure it's covered by the most dedicated person, not just the person who emails me first. Send me a message illustrating a few of your ideas and why you want this project and I will get back to the right person in the next week.

Tennis Centre gone Wild!
Photographer: Open

Deadline: May 14 (Friday!)
Story about the crazy shenanigans going on at the Tennis Centre. I'm looking for some brave soul to wander down to the tennis centre, snap some shots of the outside (inside if you can too!) and then slog back up. I know you can do it!

Investigative Journalists hit the hard drive jackpot
Photographer: Open

Deadline: May 18
A team of investigative journalists from the UBC J-school recently won some very fancy awards for a documentary in which they discovered super-secretive Pentagon data on tossed hard drives in Ghana. We can probably get a hold of some of the dudes for a photo or something

Camp gets kids back on the couch
Photographer: Geoff

Deadline: May 18th
So UBC is hosting a video game camp in late July early August and has been causing a ruckus. Since we're writing the article before the actual start of the camp, this will be some sort of photo illustration.

Couched out?
Photographer: Open

Deadline: May 24
Couchsurfing has become one of the most popular ways to find somewhere to stay for cheap while travelling, especially amongst students. Is there a Couchsurfing community at UBC? Looking for a great photo illustration to complement this interesting story. Who's got a sleepy girl/boyfriend? Props to the person who can catch someone actually sleeping

Music Waste
Photographer: Open

Deadline: June 10-12 (TBD)
Vancouver's annual underground music festival. Go to the first show, get your shots, laugh at all the hipster kids (or join in). No word yet on what band you'll be seeing, we're still figuring out the who's who on that end, but this will be fun. Dates are June 9-13, the commitment will not be for the entire festival, but a select night or two.

In the House Festival
Photographer: Mirah

Deadline: June 5
This festival features shows hosted in people's houses. So they're like house parties, but actually concerts. Apparently this is an on going thing. Rad. Go to the first night of the festival, shoot the show, get some shots of the venue (ie someone's abode), and have some fun while you're at it. First night is June 4.
