Our first two issues will be 24 pages each, which is a lot. There's a lot going on around town and a lot of great shots to be taken. There are also a couple of stories that could work well for a longer photo essay — talk to me for more details.
Stories are past the jump; get back to me at photos@ubyssey.ca if you're interested in this or if you've got another story to pitch.
--Bar Reviews
We’re still looking to for more writers for a review of the bars around campus (but not on campus) – bars within 20 minutes bussing. This will now be appearing in the issue that will be out the first week of school. As we said before... We want to detail the good, the bad, and the ugly for each of them. We want which place has the cheapest pitchers, the flirtiest waitresses, the best tunes, the douchebaggiest bouncers. This will be a sacred text we are passing down to a new generation of thirsty UBC students and we take it very seriously. Reviews will be short, about 200 words each, and you don’t have to do them all (just one is fine). Don’t forget to mention if the bathrooms are filthy enough to eat out of.
Deadline September 4
--"Morning After" breakfasts
The Ubyssey thinks it is being clever by making the issue that goes out at the start of the first week have a report on area bars, and the issue for the end of the week have a report on "morning after" eateries. Or maybe we just drink too much. So, this time we're looking for the best greasy food, the most overwhelming hum of electric lights, and the waitresses with the knowingest glances/glares. Bonus points for proximity to pharmacies that sell Plan B.
Deadline September 7
--Chinese Varsity Club profile
They're the most massive club, with thousands of members. They have a knack for getting themselves in controversy, from their use of Rickshaws to celebrate "Chinese culture" in the 50s to the anti-immigrant youtube video they posted last year. They get criticized by other ethnic clubs because they are "multicultural" rather than ethnically pure, something that led them to hand out bananas last year while recruiting. They're the Chinese Varsity Club, and quite frankly we have little idea what they actually get up to. Enlighten us.
Deadline September 7
--Fringe Fest
Fringe plus Hive and the New Bees!
We’ll do some previews, some reviews and a specific, slightly longer article on Hive and the New Bees. Check out the Fringe program. Is there something you want to review in the first week, or preview for the second week? Let us know and we’ll hook up the passes. We’re looking for short (250-350 word) articles.
Due September 7/11/14
Hive and the New Bees is a conglomerate project between SFU, Langara and UBC students (again, why we’re interested in this specific show). They’ve been working together for the better part of the summer doing creative exchanges. The result of these meetings is the show. Part performance, part audience interaction. Anything is fair game in this show! (As with most of the shows at Fringe.) The Hive article will be a preview/profile.

--Back to School Barbeque
September 11th
The AMS is putting on a back to school BBQ event, as they have for the past 26 years. Music will be played, and awkward firstyears will probably get taken advantage of. You’ll get a free ticket, and maybe some free beer. The event will take place on September 11th, and we’re hoping to publish an article for the next issue so the deadline will be by the next day. We’ll be looking for a medium sized article (400-600 words) about the event as a whole.
Extra Credit: Is anyone interested in doing an interview with Thunderheist, Sex Attack!, or Green Go? They will be playing at the festival, and we can look into setting up an interview with one of these acts if you are interested. The interview would have an earlier deadline, one for the issue preceding the Back to School Barbeque.
Deadline: Sept 12
--Mother Mother, Said the Whale, and Hannah Georgas
September 12
The Pit Pub will be hosting a concert exclusive for UBC students: Mother Mother, Said the Whale, and Hannah Georgas will be playing there on Saturday, September the 12th. We want some one to conduct an interview with one of these artists before the concert, to run in the issue that precedes it. We're also possibly interested in getting a concert review in the paper for the next day.
