Summer Stories #1: News Onslaught!

There are eight (!) news stories upcoming that need photos or graphics. Email me at photos@ubyssey.ca if you're interested and we'll go from there:

1 - { NEWS -SEWAGE TO FERTILIZER}
Photographer: OPEN
Event Date: TBA

At a wastewater conference last week, a team of researchers at UBC showed off their "groundbreaking nutrient recovery system" that changes sewage into fertilizer.
Interview the researchers -- this is interesting. Inquire about what's the plan now -- and what effect this system can have on our economy and environment.

2 - { NEWS - SUMMER VS WINTER CLASSES}
Photographer: Kathy Yan Li
Event Date: TBA

If you take a course in the summer VS the winter session at UBC, what are the differences? Yeah, they're a lot shorter, but is the material easier? Are some things left out of the syllabus? Are the profs that teach in the summer more lenient? Look at the pros and cons of taking summer vs winter courses -- does the time you take a certain course have an advantage?
Talk to some profs that you know teach the same course in the winter and summer (eg. Gateman and Economics) and find out.
And some students who have an opinion -- who have taken both summer and winter courses (catch them outside class)

3 - { NEWS - ARCHIVAL ADVENTURES}
Photographer: OPEN
Event Date: TBA

This one isn't an article so much as a side project I'll be working on over the summer -- and I'd like some help. The Vancouver Archives (at Kitsilano Point, by the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre) has archives for every building in Vancouver, including UBC. Stuff I saw when I went there include the Botanical Gardens and the Endowment Lands. You would just come with me or go on your own and collect data that we can use for future stories, background info, or pieces of interest. Learning how to use archives and gather information is something every journalist should learn.

4 - { NEWS - ABORIGINAL BUSINESS EDUCATION @ UBC}
Photographer: OPEN
Event Date: TBA

This accord was signed on May 8. UBC is one out of 22 post-secondary schools to join this venture. Interview Professor Muzyka, dean of Sauder, and ask him exactly what this project aims to do and its origins. What are other post-secondary schools' role in this?

5 - { NEWS - PROVINCIAL REQUIREMENTS CHANGED}
Photographer: OPEN
Event Date: TBA

What does this mean for incoming students? Is it fair?
At its meeting of May 14, 2008, the Vancouver Senate suspended its rules in order to consider for the second time in one Senate session a proposal to remove BC provincial examinations (other than those required for high school graduation) as admission requirements. The proposal was approved, and provincial examinations will not be required for applicants to begin studies in September 2009. This policy is now applicable to both the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.
Provincial examinations are still required for applicants to begin studies in September 2008.

6 - { NEWS - WINE LIBRARY PROFILE}

Photographer: gerald deo

I did not know we had a wine library. Cool! Do a profile and find out exactly what this place holds, its origins, research ventures, etc. Go on a tour; get some awesome photos.

This pitch is flexible: either do a) a one on one profile with Pollan, b) Go to the event and report on it, or c) Do a combination of both. I encourage c) if you are enthusiastic. Yesterday at Council, the AMS passed a motion to approve a financing agreement for a new student centre for the EUS. Are there plans drawn up already for this student centre? Won't construction be busy with SUB construction? When will this happen?

The following are stories in progress, so you'd be working on a tighter timeframe:
